🎉 Pride weekend events guide

Hey, DC. Sad news for all the mid-day snackers and WFH baddies. Foxtrot is reopening, but not in D.C. But, that’s ok, we all know there’s only one fox that really matters in this city, and it doesn't sell overpriced natural wine.

GOP Looks to Tighten Grip On DC

House Republicans seem intent on controlling Washingtonian’s lives. A new bill would invalidate multiple D.C. laws and cut funding for local programs. They include nixing funding for abortions for low-income women, allowing concealed firearms, and repealing police reforms. The bill still faces heavy scrutiny from the House and Senate and must be signed by the President before it goes into law. [Washingtonian]

Jain Wins Shadow Senator Nomination

After days of uncertainty, Attorney Ankit Jain officially won the nomination for Shadow Senator in one of few consequential primaries on election day. Jain beat out controversial ex-Bowser staffer Eugene Kinlow and says his #1 priority is achieving D.C. statehood, as it should be. Barring a surprise competitor, Jain will take the seat from Sen. Michael D. Brown who is retiring. [City Cast DC 🎧]

DC Insider Trivia

First, Let’s Answer Last Week’s Question:

What fast-casual restaurant was NOT founded in D.C.?

  1. CAVA
  2. Sweetgreen
  3. Nando’s PERi-PERi ⭐
  4. Rasa

Nice work! Nando’s PERi-PERi, while delicious, is the only spot on this list that was NOT started in D.C.

D.C. is a fast-casual powerhouse. Besides the popular chains above, we also started Call Your Mother, Five Guys, &Pizza, Little Sesame, Roaming Rooster, PLNT Burger, and many many more.

We chatted with food writer Tim Ebner about why this is. He said it comes down to two main reasons. The first is that D.C. is a very affluent city with many white-collar workers who love quick and quality meal options. The second is that companies use D.C. as a test market to see how they can compete against other chains in a variety of neighborhoods and customer markets. But hey, we’re not complaining!

🏆 Congratulations to readers Baji D., Orest S., and Marcey R. for guessing correctly first.

  1. The Scarlet Oak
  2. The Maple Tree
  3. A Pine Tree
  4. The Flowering Dogwood
