😋 DC sweeps James Beard Awards
June 11, 2024 · 💌 Kaela
Hey, D.C. Welcome to day two of Parks Week! Fittingly, a young male black bear was seen making its way through Arlington County yesterday. There’s been a ton of bears around recently, here’s what to do if you see one.

What's CITY Talking About?
DC Sweeps James Beard Awards
It was a big night for local chefs at yesterday's James Beard Awards. Perry's Masako Morishita won the emerging chef category for her home-style Japanese dishes. But, the biggest prize of the night, the outstanding chef award, went to Albi's Michael Rafidi, a Palestinian-American local whipping up Levantine food in Navy Yard. Luckily, he's expanding to Union Market soon. [Axios DC]

Protesters Form “Red-Line” at White House
Thousands of protesters surrounded the White House on Saturday calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. Protesters wore red to symbolize President Biden’s “red line” claim that he would cut weapons trading with Israel if they invaded population centers in Rafah. The protest follows the weeks-long Gaza solidarity encampment at GWU, which was cleared by MPD in May. [Washington Post 🔒/City Cast DC]
Holiday Market Power Struggle
A power struggle is muddying the plans for this year’s Downtown Holiday Market. Tensions are high between the market’s co-producers, DowntownDC BID and Diverse Markets Management, after the former held a competition to replace Diverse Markets Management. But the market operator is refusing to relinquish control. The battle has led to confusion amongst vendors, as the direction for this year’s market under new management looks unclear. Reality TV Goes DC
It’s going to be a big year for reality TV in the DMV! 2024’s offerings include a Rockvillian Golden Bachelorette and a D.C.-based season of Love is Blind. Dating shows might be your best bet to finding love in the District after all 🤪 [City Cast DC 🎧]

Call 311 For Tree Maintenance
See an empty tree box or a public tree that needs maintenance? Report it to 311! DDOT's Urban Forestry Division takes care of D.C.’s 170,000 public trees and you can ask that they plant a new street tree or take care of an existing one. Contact 311 or visit trees.dc.gov for more information.
But the real question is, if all of D.C.’s statues came to life, who would win in a fight? My money is on Joan of Arc in Malcolm X Park or the beefy boys outside the Federal Trade Commission.
