🎉 How to celebrate Juneteenth in DC

June 17, 2024 · 💌 Kaela

Hey, D.C. It’s going to be a scorcher this week with temps reaching triple digits. D.C. has activated its heat emergency plan and opened cooling centers around the city. Remember to hydrate, stay cool, and look after your neighbors and pets!

What's CITY Talking About?

Concerning Amount of Deaths at DC Jail

Five people have died in D.C. Jail so far this year. The ACLU is calling for increased oversight, with D.C.’s incarcerated mortality rate far outpacing the national average. [Washington City Paper]

Officials Quarrel Over Low School Attendance Rate

Chronic absenteeism is getting out of control in D.C. public schools, with rates hitting above 80% at some schools. Mayor Bowser introduced a bill that takes a punitive approach, while opponents, including the Attorney General, argue that social services, not prosecution, are the answer. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Dumpster Drama at Call Your Mother

During the Georgetown zoning hearing regarding Call Your Mother, CCTV footage shows the main plaintiff illegally dumping waste in the bakery’s trash cans. The plaintiff claims she was disposing of dead rats attracted by Call Your Mother’s trash. That's what I call a schmear campaign. [Washingtonian]

Construction Shuts Down Ohio Drive

Starting today, a small stretch of Ohio Drive SW by the Lincoln Memorial will be closed for six years to construct a tunnel for redirecting waste water away from the Potomac. A temporary traffic diversion route is expected to be open by October 15. [WTOP]

First, Where Was Last Week’s Photo?

Ok art nerds! Yes, this is the Pavillions at the Glenstone Museum in Potomac. The indoor-outdoor museum displays post-World War II artwork and sculptures on 230 stunning acres. It is a hefty trek from D.C., but the architecture and grounds alone make it worth the trip.

The Pavilions, their largest gallery space, is a mix of rotating exhibitions and permanent installations. Don’t miss the Michael Heizer and Barbara Kruger rooms. The full outside loop is 1.5 miles, with lots of fun sculptures along the way. Also make sure to stop by the patio cafe, equipped with sugar cookies, coffee, and shade umbrellas.

🏆 Congratulations to Maya C., Michela S., and Heather N. for getting it right first!

Some of your favorite works at the museum included:

“The Richard Serra sculptures that appear out of nowhere as you walk through the forest.” – Vanessa B.

“The Split-Rocker by Jeff Koons” – MacKenzi N

“Tony Smith’s ‘Smug’” – Lahaina M.
