Special Election to Replace PG Councilmember
PG County will hold a special election to replace at-large council member Mel Franklin, who resigned amid embezzlement charges. The primary will be held August 6 and the general election on November 5. [Washington Post 🔒]
Takoma Metro Reopens Early
Red Line riders rejoice! The Takoma station will reopen tomorrow, after finishing station and track upgrades early. Red Line service between Glenmont and Takoma will still be halted until August 31. [WMATA]
New Bike Trail In NE
D.C. received a $25 million federal grant to build a trail connecting Fort Lincoln to the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail. The project will build a new pedestrian bridge and renovate the New York Ave NE Bridge, with construction beginning in 2026. [Axios]
VA Allows Winter Crabbing
Virginia repealed a ban on winter dredging for blue crabs in a push for year-round crabbing. Many environmentalists oppose the decision, pointing to dwindling blue crab numbers. [Northern Virginia Magazine]

Why Georgetown Doesn’t Have A Metro Stop, And Other Explanations
If you live on the Red Line, you know it’s been a summer of Metro closures — which makes it a great time to check out one of our favorite early City Cast episodes. We sat down with Metro historian Zack Schrag and transit planner Matt Johnson to talk about one of my favorite pastimes: Making up fantasy Metro lines that can get you exactly where you want to go. Or, at least, talking about why they can’t quite happen in real life.
