🏠 DC's getting more housing and less crime

July 10, 2024 · 💌 Kaela

Hey, neighbor! ICYMI we’re having a live podcast taping this Saturday at metrobar! We’ll be chatting with D.C.’s Office of Planning about the resiliency of D.C. neighborhoods. Can’t wait to see you there!

What's CITY Talking About?

Big Decrease In Carjackings

Carjackings have dropped 46% in D.C., breaking a years-long surge. The U.S. Attorney for D.C. attributes the reduction to the new MPD carjacking task force, increased arrests, and better investigative tech that makes it easiest to track suspects. [WTOP]

DC To Meet Much Needed Housing Production Goal

D.C. is on track to meet its housing production goal of producing 36,000 units by next month. So far, 9,771 units are affordable housing. This is critical as a new report shows that a minimum-wage earner in D.C. would need at least two full-time jobs to afford a one-bedroom apartment at Fair Market Rent. Even then, only 8 - 10% of D.C. apartments are listed at Fair Market Rent or lower. [Urban Turf/WUSA9]

Car Crashes Into Dupont Building

A truck flipped over and crashed into a Dupont Circle coworking office early yesterday morning. The two people in the car fled the scene. No one was injured. [NBC4]

Moped Mania

MPD is cracking down on illegal mopeds following a 165% jump in ridership. The boom is largely powered by Venezuelan migrants finding work through food delivery apps. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Police are clamping down amid a massive moped boom. But it’s not just a new way of commuting — mopeds have become a core part of D.C. food delivery and their riders are some of the most vulnerable people in the industry. Axios’ Anna Spiegel is here to explain.
