Metro Operators Often Exhausted, Sometimes Drunk

A safety watchdog report says Metro fails to adequately screen train operators for exhaustion and intoxication. One operator even left Metro in September after showing up to a shift drunk. The safety board is determining if it can force WMATA to change its protocols. [Washington Post 🔒]

Pest Control Company Found Dumping Chemical Waste

A Maryland-based pest control company must pay D.C. $140,000 after it was accused of ignoring safety regulations and spreading hazardous chemicals in areas with children and animals. The company must also repay the city for the cleanup fees. [WTOP]

Maryland Assault Weapon Ban Upheld

A federal appeals court ruled that Maryland can ban assault-style weapons, bolstering gun control efforts in the state. The court upheld that such weapons are ineffective and inappropriate for self-defense. [Washington Post 🔒]
