💰Moon Rabbit workers get settlement money

August 16, 2024 · 💌 Kaela

Hey, D.C.! Heman Bekele, a student at Woodson High School in Fairfax County, is TIME’s Kid of the Year. He invented a soap that could one day treat and prevent skin cancer. Pretty sure when I was 15, my parents still had to remind me to use soap at all.

First, Let’s Answer Last Week’s Question:

Where does go-go music get its name?

  1. From a band that helped originate the genre.
  2. From the sound of go-go’s beat.
  3. From its ability to keep people “going and going” on the dance floor. ⭐
  4. “Father of go-go” Chuck Brown made it up on a whim.

Yep, go-go music gets its name from its ability to keep people dancing! In the early years of the genre, it made perfect sense because in between songs, the percussion would continue to play, while the band leader would do a call-and-response with the audience.

Bands would put on “marathon performances” that would keep fans on the dance floor for hours. Chuck Brown, known as “the god-father of go-go,” said eliminating song breaks was a way of competing with disco DJs popular on the local D.C. scene.

Andre “Whiteboy” Johnson, founding member of the legendary band Rare Essence told us that even today, keeping fans dancing informs how they play. “When creating new music, we start a groove right there, live on stage,” Johnson says. “As we're playing it, we’re creating it. If the audience is vibing to it, then we keep going. Our creativity in part comes from the audience.”

🏅 Nice work, Joan L., Angela A. and Kiyana S. for guessing correctly first!
