FBI arrests Ward 8 Councilmember

August 19, 2024 · 💌 Kaela

Hey, neighbor, the Democratic National Convention kicks off today, and it’s got us wondering what a Harris administration would look like for D.C. Kamala Harris is a known local foodie, but would that appreciation find its way to other parts of our city as well? On the flip side, here’s what a Trump presidency would mean for D.C.

Where Is It?

Seems to be a fountain of some kind? (NCinDC/Flickr)

First, Where Was Last Week’s Photo?

This is called the Temperance Fountain, located across from the Archives Metro stop in Penn Quarter. Today, it’s just a pretty monument, but it has a somewhat tempestuous past.

In 1882, a wealthy dentist — Dr. Henry Cogswell — thought if people could get free cold water, they wouldn’t be tempted by saloons. Despite local dissent, he had the fountain installed. Surprise, surprise, no one stopped drinking booze, and the costly routine of filling the fountain with ice quickly fell to the wayside.

🏆 Congratulations to Sarah S., Rick S., and Gbenga T. for getting it right first!
