🪧 GW pro-Palestine protests revive
August 26, 2024 · 💌 Kaela
Hey, neighbor! Ever wonder what D.C.’s listening to? The Washington Post walked around Dupont and Capitol South asking what’s in people's headphones, and we’re anything but basic. Everything from Blondshell to Buffalo Farm, and of course lots of podcast listeners. Ya nerds 🤓

What's CITY Talking About?
Pro-Palestine Protests Revive
George Washington University demonstrators picked up where they left off last semester, gathering outside U-Yard to protest the Israel-Hamas war. Their demands remain the same; divest from companies doing business with Israel, end all academic programs with Israel, and drop charges against pro-Palestine protesters from earlier this summer. Vision Zero Sees Zero Success
D.C. traffic deaths have doubled since Vision Zero launched a decade ago. The program aimed to eliminate traffic deaths by 2024, but D.C. is on track to match last year’s 52 traffic deaths, a 16-year-high. [Washington Post 🔒]

Get Ready For Reading Season
The Georgetown Barnes & Noble opening keeps being pushed, but it promises to finally open on Oct. 30, just in time for cozy reading season. If you’re looking to break your reading dry spell before then, we’ve scouted out D.C.’s best book clubs for you. [Popville/City Cast DC 🎧]

Where Is It?

First, Where Was Last Week’s Photo?
Ding ding ding. This “house” is located in the sculpture garden at the National Gallery of Art. It is a sculpture built by the artist Roy Lichtenstein in 1998 and my favorite in the garden.
The side of the house looks like it is closer to you, but it’s actually receding into space. So, the house appears to move as you walk past it and makes you do a triple take.
Lichtenstein was best known for his 1960s pop art paintings based on comic strips, but in his later years started branching into sculpture and its illusionistic effects.
🏆Congratulations to Megan J., Julie K., and Gbenga T. for getting it right first!

Now, Onto This Week’s Challenge:
Who can tell me where this colorful old church is? Bonus points if you can tell me what it is used for!
