August 30, 2024 · 💌 Kaela

Hey, neighbor, if you’ve never been on a White House tour, now’s your chance. A re-creation of the White House will open across the street from the real one on Sept. 23 with free tickets.

P.S. We are out on Monday but will be back with more D.C. tidbits on Tuesday. Happy long weekend!

What's CITY Talking About?

Ward 8 Write-In Challengers Roll In

Several candidates are launching write-in campaigns to challenge Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White for his seat this November. White was charged with bribery last week but is still on the ballot. His write-in challengers include former D.C. Board of Education member Markus Batchelor and ANC Olivia Henderson. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Title Insurance Bribes Busted

Four local title insurance companies paid illegal kickbacks to real estate agents for referrals, says D.C.’s attorney general. The companies did not admit liability but agreed to pay $3.29 million to settle claims and end the alleged kickbacks. [Washington Post 🔒]

DMV Seniors Missing Out On Food Aid

A new report shows thousands of DMV seniors are missing out on federal food aid. Only 34% - 37% of eligible seniors paticipate in SNAP benefits (formerly known as the Food Stamp Program). D.C.’s SNAP processing system is notoriously slow and inaccurate, over or underpaying benefits in 20% of cases. [Axios]

First, Let’s Answer Last Week’s Question:

D.C. is home to the oldest continuously operating …

  1. Open-air fish market in the United States
  2. Mini-golf course in the United States
  3. Ultramarathon race in the United States
  4. All of the above ⭐

In a way, you’re all right, because the answer is all of the above!

🐟 The Municipal Fish Market at The Wharf opened in 1805 and is the oldest continuously operating open-air fish market in the United States. It still serves tasty fresh and cooked seafood to locals and tourists alike.

⛳ D.C. was crazy for mini golf back in the day, having over 30 courses. The mini golf course at East Potomac Park opened in 1931, during the Great Depression, and is the oldest in the country. It was closed for repairs but has just reopened, featuring some of the original course obstacles.

🏃 The JFK 50 Mile Race is the oldest continually held ultra marathon in the country, and somehow, people keep showing up. Not me though.

🏅 Nice work, Brad P., Chelsea D., and Brenda J. for guessing correctly first!

  3. 80 - 100
  4. Over 100
