September 23, 2024 · — Adrian González

Happy Monday! This week, I’ve got a small request for you. Would you please take this reader survey? It’s been a long time since we checked in on how you feel about our content, and we want to make sure we’re delivering a newsletter you love! It will only take two minutes. Thank you!!

In other news, it was National Responsible Dog Ownership Day this past Saturday, and in honor of that, we’re sharing tips on how to adopt a pet in D.C. More on that below.

Remembering the 1991 Mount Pleasant Uprising

In May 1991, the Mount Pleasant neighborhood erupted into violent protests after police shot Daniel Gomez, a Salvadoran immigrant, during a Cinco de Mayo celebration. Filmmakers Ellie Walton and Quique Aviles, creators of the new documentary “La Manplesa: An Uprising Remembered,” joined the City Cast DC podcast to talk about their film and how the protests changed one of D.C.’s first barrios. First, where was last week’s photo?

You’re looking at the plaza in front of the Hirshhorn Museum.

The Hirshhorn was created by an act of Congress in 1966 to celebrate modern and contemporary artists, a complement to the classics displayed at the National Gallery of Art. The museum opened in 1974 and primarily displayed the personal art collection of banker and philanthropist Joseph H. Hirshhorn during its first ten years.

Hirshhorn was only 13 years old when he came to the United States from Latvia with his widowed mother. He donated his private art collection as a “small repayment for what this nation has done for me and others like me who arrived here as immigrants.”

🏆Congratulations to Bunmi O., Bethany C., and Michelle M., for being the first to get it right!

A lot of you shouted out the vibes and grabbing snacks from Dolcezza, but my favorite was the reader who said their friend-with-benefits used to work here and shared all the museum gossip. I’d love to meet you there and talk about the hot goss over a scoop of ice cream. 👀

Now, onto this week’s challenge:

Can you tell me where this picture was taken? Bonus points if you can tell me your favorite things to do there!
