🔴 Trump’s DC priorities
January 21, 2025 · 💌 Kaela
Hey, neighbor.
Anyone who stayed in D.C. this weekend knows that vibes have been, well, tense. The People’s March on Saturday drew thousands, which was followed up by President Trump’s victory rally at Capital One Arena and a Proud Boys march. Plus, of course, the inauguration festivities all day yesterday. Needless to say, we’re exhausted, and it’s only Tuesday.
But, there are a lot of theories going around about what this new Trump era means for D.C. So, today, we’re talking with a legal expert to find out what’s real and what isn’t 👇

What's CITY Talking About?
New Dawn for Federal Workers
On his first day in office, President Trump signed an executive order reinstating Schedule F, a policy that he originally passed during his first term (and was rolled back by President Biden), which could make it easier to fire federal workers. Trump also signed orders requiring all federal employees to return to office full-time and freezing hiring on most jobs in the executive branch. [Axios, City Cast DC 🎧]

Trump Pardons Jan. 6 Rioters
Trump pardoned roughly 1,500 defendants charged in the Jan. 6 riot, including those who assaulted police officers. He also lessened the sentences of 14 people associated with the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. [NBC News]

Commanders Advance to NFC Championship
D.C.’s football team is headed to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991, after defeating the Detroit Lions 45-31 on Saturday. Many are crediting rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the team's new coach, and the new general manager for the win. The Commanders will play the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday for a place in the Superbowl. [ESPN]
Freezing Temperatures Force School Closures
Several schools in the DMV are closed or have delayed openings today because of icy road conditions. Wind chills are forecasted to drop temperatures to near zero this morning. [NBC4]
Massive Restaurant Union Push
Employees of two of D.C.’s most famous restaurateurs, Stephen Starr and Ashok Bajaj, are simultaneously pushing for unionization. The staff at Le Diplomate, St. Anselm, Pastis, Rasika, and Modena say they want better pay, hours, and respect. This is one of the biggest coordinated unionization efforts D.C.’s restaurant industry has ever seen. [Washingtonian]
