DOGE’s takeover of DC
February 6, 2025 · 💌 Kaela
Hey, D.C. It’s the last day for federal workers to decide if they want to accept a “deferred resignation” from the Trump administration. It’s a nerve-wracking time, but at least you might get a free drink out of it.
DC9 is having a “hold the line” happy hour today where federal workers get $2 beverages from 5 - 7 p.m. Meanwhile, at Right Proper, you can pay it forward and buy a beer for a laid-off federal employee.

What's CITY Talking About?

DOGE Protest and Other Federal Updates
Federal employees and local lawmakers are trying everything they can to stop Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency from gutting federal institutions. Yesterday, Virginia’s House Speaker formed a new committee to address attacks on the federal workforce. Meanwhile, D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton encouraged anti-DOGE protesters outside the Department of Labor to fight back. [City Cast DC 🎧]
- Thousands gathered at the Capitol yesterday to protest President Trump’s dismantling of USAID and its impact on the federal workforce based in D.C. [AP]
- So far, 20,000 people — or about 1% of the federal workforce nationally — have taken the deferred resignation “buyout” deal. [Axios]
- The CIA has extended the “buyout” deal to all its employees, which was previously unavailable to most national security roles. [WTOP]
- Hundreds of federal workers voiced their discomfort and fears about the future at a town hall in Leesburg, VA. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA) advised attendees not to take the federal buyout deal. [WTOP]
DMV Schools Late Start
Several DMV area schools, including Montgomery and Fairfax County Public Schools, will open two hours late this morning “due to wintery weather.” [NBC Washington]
Bird Flu Hits DMV
A backyard flock of chickens in Montgomery County tested positive for bird flu, bringing the local case count to 11. While the flu spreads easily among birds, the risk to humans is low. [Washington Post 🔒]

DC's Best Super Bowl Sunday Takeout

The Commanders may have fallen short of the Super Bowl, but that doesn’t mean we can’t cheer from the sidelines. Whether you're hosting a watch party, watching alone, or just tuning in to the Kendrick Lamar halftime show and nothing else (🙋), make it easy and grab takeout. These are the best deals we’ve found for groups big and small.
Bluejacket (Navy Yard)
This brewery has a couple of take-home packages, the largest of which can feed 15 and includes 50 chicken wings, house-made tater tots, chips and dip, 25 sliders, and pretzel bites. (Serves 5 - 15)
Matt & Tony’s (Alexandria)
This family-friendly neighborhood restaurant will serve its classic take-home BBQ platter for Super Bowl Sunday. It includes BBQ ribs, a half chicken, collards, mac n’ cheese, cornbread, and white sauce for $85. (Serves 4)
2Fifty BBQ (Hyattsville and Penn Quarter)
You can get platters of various sizes at this beloved Texan BBQ joint. They all include a mix of ribs, hot honey wings, smoked sausages, sides, pickles, and of course, a whole bottle of BBQ sauce. (Serves 4 - 15)
Tonari "Kats’s King of Suteki" Pop-Up (Chinatown)
Eagles fans can grab takeout from this Japanese x Philly cheesesteak pop-up. Choose between two variations on the classic sandwich and head to the dedicated “fixins” bar. Grab some S&B Curry seasoned fries on the side. (Serves 1 to a million)

Sticky Fingers Diner (H St. NE)
This completely plant-based diner has four different options, but my favorite is The Swiftie, which features Taylor’s go-to fast food items like cheeseburgers, chocolate milkshakes, “chicken” tenders, and funfetti cake. (Serves 2-3)
Colada Shop (Multiple Locations)
Craving something other than wings? This Cuban cafe’s take-out platters include empanadas, yucca, plantain chips, sliders, and a churro platter. Maybe add on a box of the classic Cuban hot chocolate, just a thought. (Serves 6 - 12)
