March 28, 2025 · 💌 Kaela
Peak bloom is upon us! 🌸
It’s time to get out there and beat up some tourists for a front line view at the Tidal Basin. Or you could check out some more underrated spots. Or just do away with it all together and go get a cherry blossom-themed sweet treat.

What's CITY Talking About?
Trump Makes DC Crime Taskforce
Trump signed an executive order to create a taskforce to “make the nation's capital safe again.” It calls for a surge of law enforcement in public spaces, increased ICE activity, and more concealed carry licenses in D.C. The order also calls for a “beautifying” program to remove homeless encampments and graffiti. [White House]
Trump Overhauls Smithsonian Museums
In another executive order, Trump targeted funding for Smithsonian programs that advance “improper ideology,” and put Vice President JD Vance in charge of efforts to remove them. Trump singled out the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the American Art Museum for spreading “ideological indoctrination.” [WTOP]
DC 2026 Budget Delayed, Awaiting House Decision
Mayor Bowser is delaying finalizing her 2026 budget plan until the House decides the fate of the $1 billion cut to this year’s budget. House Speaker Mike Johnson is stalling bringing the bill to a vote. [Washington Post 🔒]

Metro GM Calls For More Government Efficiency
In an interview about D.C.’s long-term future, Metro general manager Randy Clarke told Axios that environmental reviews are one of the biggest obstacles impeding transit projects, calling out expensive consultants and permits as lags on efficiency. [City Cast DC 🎧]
Big Win For DC Pet Owners
A new D.C. law, dubbed “Roscoe's Law,” caps pet rental fees and deposits, and bans breed and size discrimination. It also requires D.C. to have a dedicated pet-friendly shelter for unhoused people with pets. [WUSA9]
