🫨 Bowser’s budget spurs progressive backlash
May 30, 2025 · 💌 Kaela
Hey, neighbor. Thanks for taking our poll yesterday! New reports show that Washingtonian’s are dining out less and it seems like you guys are no exception. 79% of you said you’re trying to eat out less 🤔

What's CITY Talking About?
Progressive Pushback On Budget
Mayor Bowser proposed a pro-business budget this week. But the proposal is drawing criticism from progressives, who say the budget cuts out programs for D.C.’s most vulnerable, including shrinking the number of residents eligible for Medicaid. [City Cast DC 🎧]
- Also tucked away in Bowser’s budget was a clause to repeal D.C.'s sanctuary city law, which would allow local police to assist with deportations. [Axios]
VA Discusses New Food Regulations
Virginia is considering new state-level food safety regulations due to drastic cuts to the federal agencies responsible for food safety which have left gaps in the regulatory process. [WTOP]
Ward 8 Tree Coverage Dwindling
A new analysis of D.C.’s tree coverage shows that Ward 8 lost more trees to development projects than any other ward. Their removal puts residents at a higher risk of experiencing urban heat islands and flooding. [City Paper]
MD Independents Want To Vote In Primaries
A group of independent Maryland voters are suing the state, saying that not letting independents vote in primary elections is unconstitutional. This is being seen as a test case for open primary advocates nationwide. [Washington Post 🔒]

DC Insider Trivia

My favorite activity is reading one-star reviews for things that really have no business being reviewed — serious or not, I laugh every time.
Can you guess what D.C. monument these one-star reviews are about?
“Came after watching “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” and he did not come alive as portrayed in the film. Very disappointed. Also there is no bathroom there and I had to poo really bad. Not coming back.” — I M
“I went there looking to shake hands with the man who ended slavery. Wasn't there, just a statue of him. WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL US GIANTS WERE REAL!?!?!” — Jack Hains
“Not enough giant pillars 0/10” — John LaVecchia
