Major federal agency leaves DC
June 26, 2025 · 💌 Kaela
Hey, neighbor! Pride month is almost over but we couldn’t let it pass without looking back — all the way back — at the secretive gay history of Washington. Author James Kirchick chatted with us about D.C.’s queer scene in the 50s, from infamous mob bosses to the Lavender Scare.

What's CITY Talking About?
HUD Moves To Virginia
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is moving to an office in Alexandria, a space currently used by 1,800 National Science Foundation employees. The HUD will be the first major federal agency to move out of D.C. under Trump’s rightsizing plan. [WTOP]
Maryland Plans Hiring Freeze
Governor Wes Moore is implementing a hiring freeze starting July 1 to help close the state's $121 million budget shortfall. The state is also eliminating all vacant positions and starting a voluntary buyout program. [NBC4]
Arlington’s Missing Middle Housing Is Back
Yesterday, an appeals court ruled that Arlington can indeed eliminate single-family-only zoning. The policy has been legally debated for years and will now be sent back to lower courts for review. [Washington Post 🔒]
Detention Center AC Broken As Temps Soar
D.C.'s juvenile detention center's AC hasn't been functioning properly, leaving over 100 kids and staff to endure recent 100 degree temps in closed-window rooms. The center is working with city’s Department of General Services to fix it. [Washington Post 🔒]
