How developers are ripping off DC

December 11, 2025 · 💌 Kaela

Mornin’! We’re in the 🎶 final countdown 🎶 of our membership campaign and we really need your support. In a time when national headlines offer little but doom and gloom, we’re zooming in because we know that hope, unity and connection happen at the local level.

When you join City Cast DC Neighbors, you’re literally sustaining the local conversation — one that’s curious, passionate, human, and deeply invested in this city that we all call home.

Only 48 hours left to join and get our limited edition postcards made by local artist Carlos Carmonamedina. Perfect to send to your family, crush, or hang on your fridge. I love the one that celebrates Porchfest, one of my favorite events D.C.

What's CITY Talking About

Developers Make Bank On Local Affordable Housing Project

We talked to the Washington Post reporter who is getting to the bottom of a D.C. housing scandal in which a group of D.C. developers with political ties to Mayor Bowser will collect millions more than normal for an affordable housing project near RFK Stadium. “Bluntly, the taxpayers of D.C. are being screwed by this,” one expert told the Post. Drunk Racoon Turns To Fundraising

The viral sloshed Virginia raccoon that made it onto SNL last week has inadvertently raised $170,560 for a Virginia animal shelter that sold more than 15,000 pieces of “Trashed Panda” merchandise. The design features a raccoon, paws splayed, next to a toppled liquor bottle. [Washingtonian]

Research Hub Memorializes Black Boys Buried At Abandoned Md. Graveyard

A new research project at Georgetown University will start its work by investigating the deaths of over 230 kids who died at the former House of Reformation and Instruction for Colored Children in Maryland, including finding their families. Eventually, the hub will be a resource for forgotten graveyards nationwide. [Washington Post 🔒]

Dems Support DC Unionization Efforts

Several Congressional Democrats are supporting D.C. restaurant unionization efforts, even threatening to boycott spots that don’t enter negotiations. Losing the business of some of these politicians — who often host political fundraisers and other events at local restaurants — could be a big blow. [Axios]
