Another gov’t shutdown looms

January 27, 2026 · 💌 Kaela

Happy snowday, again! Flights resumed at DCA yesterday but the rest of the city is struggling to get back to normal after Sunday’s storm. Many DMV area schools remain closed (and could be for most of the week), Metrorail is running a pared down schedule, and bus routes are limited. It’s probablyyy a good day to stay cozy if you can 🤭

What's CITY Talking About

Partial Government Shutdown Looms

A partial government shutdown is looking likely this week as Senate Democrats move to block a government funding package after the second deadly shooting in Minneapolis Saturday. Dems say they won’t vote for legislation that would continue ICE funding without significant changes to the agency’s operations. [Washington Post 🔒]

Crews Rush To Contain Sewer Overflow

D.C. Water has mostly contained the massive sewer overflow that began after a sewer line collapsed last week along the Clara Barton Parkway. The break caused sewage to flow into the Potomac and C&O Canal, but D.C.’s drinking water remains safe. [City Cast DC 🎧]

See ICE In Arlington? Call 911

Some local officials in Arlington are advising residents to call 911 if they see ICE officers on duty. They claim there’s been little coordination between immigration officials and local law enforcement and knowing where agents are can help police prevent violence. [ARLnow]

DC Is Turning Cubicles to Condos

Developers have started work on the Geneva, a $750 million project to convert two empty office buildings in Dupont into 532 apartments, including 60 affordable units. D.C. is giving the developers $95 million in tax breaks over the next 20 years to spur similar conversions. [Washington Post 🔒]
