DC pushes back on Congress over tax law
February 25, 2026 · 💌 Kaela
Morning, neighbor! My hot take is that D.C. doesn’t have any old-school diners — you know, leather booths, unlimited coffee, Elvis memorabilia. Warren Rojas disagrees — he wrote a piece for the Post with his favorites. Today he’s on the podcast with his list of the DMV’s best diners to prove me wrong.

What's CITY Talking About
SOTU Brings Out Hundreds Of Protesters
Hundreds of people and several Democratic members of Congress gathered on the National Mall last night to boycott Trump's State of the Union Address. In it, he touted D.C. crime as being the "lowest level ever recorded," which the New York Times later fact-checked as exaggerated. He also discussed job growth in the private sector, despite overall job growth numbers remaining low due to so many federal layoffs. [Politico/New York Times 🔒]
Potomac Recreation To Reopen Soon Post Sewage Spill
D.C. wants to lift its ban on Potomac River recreation on March 2, six weeks after the initial sewer pipe collapse. Federal crews have been helping with cleanup after D.C.'s public emergency declaration, however NBC4 reports that the federal government won’t be covering 100% of repair costs as initially expected. Congress Too Late To Block Tax Policy, Says Attorney General
Congress voted to block D.C. from opting out of President Trump’s tax cuts, which could cost the city millions in the middle of tax season. But D.C.’s Attorney General argued yesterday that Congress acted too late, making the resolution invalid. This puts D.C. in uncharted territory and could set up a fight with Congress over a D.C. home rule issue. [Washington Post 🔒]
Compass Coffee Co-Founder Opposes Sale
British coffee chain Caffè Nero bought Compass Coffee at auction last week for $4.76 million. Now, one of the D.C. cafe’s co-founders, Harrison Suarez, is objecting to the deal in court, saying it was rushed and inadequately marketed. [City Cast DC 🎧/Washington Business Journal]
